....here is the sequel to my earlier post....
It all began when one my former student's mom called us to let us know she had been on the look-out and had found a long-haired chihuahua for Man of House. (This lady has found many of our current and past pets for us before.)This little guy was going to be taken to the pound if a home for him was not found....so this is where we come in.
Shaggy (the name his former owner had given him....Shagford Austin Nebulus Pike the name we gave him) is a very, very, quiet and cute black and white long-haired Chi. However, he was "in tact" (and still is for that matter). We were planning to take him to visit Dr. Snip-snip when Molly (Kalli's Dog -- a Rat Terrier-Chihuahua mix) went into heat. We kept them apart as best we could, but as in Romeo and Juliet, love (or rather lust on Shaggy's part) won out.
Now, for anyone who has ever witnessed dogs mating, something known as a "tie" happens....after the initial copulation, the male's and female's "privacy parts" (as my first graders call them) swell and the pair are "tied together" till the "parts" un-swell....this can last anywhere from 10 - 20 minutes. During this little event, the male swings his front legs around and thus the two are posterior to posterior....
To us, who had not ever witnessed dog's mating, this was a comical shock. A shock because it was so...so....so unusual (God bless Google) and comical because Molly is several inches taller than Shaggy...so his rear legs were about 2 inches off the ground. This must have been Molly's first sexual act since she yelped the entire time and tried to run away from Shaggy. As Molly ran, she dragged poor Shaggy behind her....and every time she turned a corner, Shaggy's head was banged against a wall or a door jamb....by the time he was able to extract himself from her his little eyes were just a'swrilin' in his head.
At first we hoped that Molly would not be "in the family way"...but alas, we were wrong. By last Wednesday (12.16.09)she was walking like all pregnant women I have seen walk. She could not sit, she could not lay down, she just could not get comfortable....when we came home from work Thursday, Kalli called us into her room because there were 2 puppies on her bed....actually there were 6 teenie tiny creatures on it! ( one was dead but she was keeping it next to her and was trying to keep it warm -- it's body was already cold). After the initial shock, we cleaned and sterilized her bed and the entire room, and we made the new little family a bed of their own. We also bought a small heater for Kalli's room to give it some extra heat for the wee ones.
Molly is a good mommy, and the room does not smell one bit...in fact it smells like clean cotton and a little like bleach (two of my most favorite smells in the world).
Now Molly has the look of all new mommies....whenever we come into the room to look at her babies, her eyes just plead with us..."please don't wake the babies...I just got them to sleep!
